Carpineto Sinello

Carpineto Sinello

Carpineto Sinello is a picturesque village of medieval origin nestled in the curves of a hill at 381 meters above sea level. From there, a pleasant panoramic view of the valleys of the Sinello River and the Ferrato stream with Monte Sorbo as a backdrop is offered.

The discovery of Italic tombs attests to the antiquity of the settlement in the area, confirming the presence of human communities since very ancient times. The earliest mention of the municipality of Carpineto Sinello dates back to 1156 when it appears in the "Catalogus Baronum," a list of vassals and their possessions compiled by the Normans. At that time, Carpineto Sinello was assigned as a fief to Roberto di Monteferrante by Symon, Count of Sangro. In the following centuries, the fief passed through various hands, including those of the Acclozamora, the Pignatelli, and the Bassi families. These noble families exerted control over Carpineto Sinello until the abolition of feudal rights, which marked the transition to modernity and the transformation of the municipality into an autonomous community.

It is fascinating to note how the name of the village has roots in its geography and flora. The term "Carpineto" derives from the phytotoponym "Carpinus," which refers to the black hornbeam, a type of tree common in the area, while "Sinello" comes from its proximity to the Sinello River, which has played a significant role in the village's identity. Its history is intertwined with the economic activity of the mills that took advantage of the abundance of wheat in the surroundings. In addition to wheat production, the territory also boasted a thriving production of olive oil and wine.

A few kilometers from Carpineto Sinello is the fortified Borgo of Policorvo, first mentioned in 1036 as the Castle of Pesucurulo. Its current appearance is largely due to Baron Cesare Cauli, who built the fortified villa, now a private property, taking advantage of the ruins of the ancient castle located next to the baronial chapel of Santa Vittoria.
